In a momentous occasion filled with nostalgia and camaraderie, the South African Military Academy commemorated the 60th reunion of the class of 1963 on 12 July 2023.  These distinguished individuals were the first group to successfully complete all three years of study at the academy, cementing their place in the history of the unit.  The reunion served as a tribute to their unwavering commitment to service and their invaluable contributions.

The year 1961, in which this group (now known as MA63) started their studies at the South African Military Academy, marked the year for the first batch of “living-in" students at the unit.  Previously, the Military Academy was situated in Pretoria and after partnering with Stellenbosch 万博体育官网, the students resided at the university itself.

The journey of MA63 was characterized by dedication, discipline and a relentless pursuit of excellence, establishing the foundation for future generations of military officers.  Their coursework encompassed a comprehensive curriculum, spanning military training, physical fitness and tertiary education, setting the standard for excellence in military education that endures to this day.  Forty-one members obtained their degrees in 1963.

The 60th reunion of the class of 1963, coordinated by Major General (retired) Dan Lamprecht, was a momentous occasion and provided an opportunity for these veterans to reconnect, reminisce, and share stories of their experiences during and after their time at the South African Military Academy.  It served as a testament to the lifelong bonds forged during their training and the enduring values instilled within them.  Amongst the members that attended, was Major General (retired) Fred du toit, who later in his career became the officer commanding of the Military Academy from 30 January 1990 to 20 January 1993. Coincidentally, the current officer commanding, Brigadier General Cassie de Castro, was a student at the Military Academy during that time.

It was a privilege for the Military Academy to again host this group, as they also celebrated their 50th reunion at the Military Academy.  The event featured a presentation to the group by Brigadier General Cassie de Castro, as well the Dean of the Faculty of Military Science, Professor Samuel Tshehla, after which several discussions followed.  A memorial service was held where two wreaths were laid and the members of the group that are no longer with us, were remembered.  The reunion was concluded with an informal tea at the Military Academy Combined Club and the members were presented with a small token of appreciation to acknowledge the profound impact they have had on shaping the military landscape in South Africa, as many of them went on to assume leadership positions in the Defence Force and other sectors.

The reunion of the class of 1963 holds immense significance, not only for themselves, but also for aspiring military officers.  Their commitment, resilience and unwavering dedication serve as a source of inspiration for future generations.  By commemorating this reunion, the Military Academy reinforces its commitment to nurturing a new generation of military leaders who embodies the values of dedication, integrity, service before self and accountability.
