Undergraduate Research?
The teaching of anatomy is integral and important to the training of future clinicians. Finding innovative and ?affordable ways to achieve this is a challenge and has become a research focus area in the division. A study looking at the impact of cadaver dissection on medical students and the role that peer-discussion plays as a coping mechanism was carried out and published recently. Other published studies which have been implemented in our division was the inclusion of X-rays of cadavers dissected by medical students to the dissection hall. This provides a student with a translucent ?cadaver to use before and during dissection and emphasizes the importance of surface anatomy. A study on the use of draw-along histology mind maps in a large class setting showed the positive effect of mapping techniques used during lectures.

Postgraduate Research
In recent years, the writing of abstracts of articles presented at weekly anatomy honours journal club meetings was made compulsory in our division. A study is underway to illustrate how this and other journal club activities improve student writing and reading skills during their honours year. The research indicated that honours students have a positive perception of journal club activities.
