    A writing retreat is seen as an opportunity:
    • to create an atmosphere of trust and safety for productive writing;
    • to help participants to learn from each other about the process of writing;
    • to create a multidisciplinary community of writers who would provide support and advice to one another;
    • to explore the important links between teaching, research, writing and scholarship;
    • ??to have a productive working experience in which each participant would commit to a specific writing goal and try to achieve it. (Moore, 2003).

Virtual Writing Retreat – 7 - 10 June 2021

This was Finlo’s second “pandemic” virtual writing retreat hosted on MS Teams. This time, an even larger number of participants tuned in. Feedback was once again very positive, and participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to spend time as part of a community of practice. Structured sessions, discussions and presentations covered topics such as goal setting and contemplating one’s teaching, both in retrospect and with a view to the future. Activities also included a virtual mountain hike.?

Virtual Writing Retreat – October 2020

In view of the pandemic, the Finlo Writing Retreat was hosted on MSTeams for the first time and feedback from participants was very positive. They enjoyed meeting other applicants virtually and developed a supportive community.  Structured sessions were presented to mitigate the lack of contact.  Participants enjoy a virtual meditative walk, presentations on Finlo guidelines and on overcoming “stuck places" and blocks. Consultation sessions helped participants to resolve challenges they experienced with drafting Finlo proposals.  ?

WhatsApp Image 2018-11-15 at 10.10.33.jpeg
The November 2019 writing retreat was productive, resulting in four funding proposals and seven articles sent to co-authors or publishers. The May 2019 retreat was also productive with four funding proposals and three articles submitted by the end of the retreat. The result by the end of the retreat was that most participants achieved their goals with some submitting proposals and finalising articles for publication they had not thought they would be able to do in the limited time.???
